Assertiveness Skills' Course Aims:
- To define what Assertiveness is and isn’t
- To understand and define your beliefs and rights
- To understand the use of non-verbal communication in assertive communication
- To acquire the skills to use assertive techniques in everyday situations
Duration: 1 day
Assertiveness Skills Course Content:
Day 1
- Understanding Assertiveness and why it’s Important
- Beliefs & Rights - an examination of your rights and beliefs and why you are entitled to them
- Understanding and Identifying other Behaviours
- Identifying the Characteristics of Non-Verbal Communication:
- How the 3 behaviours are portrayed through non-verbal communication
- A practical session of how to convey Assertiveness through non-verbal communication
- Recognising the Characteristics of Verbal Communication:
- How the 3 behaviours are portrayed verbally; pace, pitch, intonation …
- Assertive Directives, Requests & Statements:
- How to relay an Assertive directive, request and statement
- Assertive techniques & building confidence
- Understanding how People Communicate:
- How to adjust your communication style to effectively communicate to all personalities and behaviours
- Role Play:
- Individuals ‘role play’ a situation where they have found it difficult to assert themselves previously
- Feedback & discussion
- Development Plan: Participants create a development plan, based on their learning that can be implemented back in the workplace
Assertiveness Skills Training Outcome
At the end of this programme, participants will have the necessary skills to:
- Project a more positive and confident self-image
- Say “no” in a way that doesn't cause resentment to others or without feeling guilty
- Only take on others’ responsibilities by choice
- Communicate assertively to people with varying communication styles
- Use confident, assertive language such as "I" statements and power words
